Center for Tropical Medicine (CTM)
Universitas Gadjah Mada

Background
Infectious diseases are still major problems in tropical countries like Indonesia, in which the mortality and morbidity rates are still high. Other tropical diseases also continuously remain public health problems. Attempts, therefore, have been made not only to widely eradicate the diseases, but also to develop strategies in prevention and management of the diseases.

It is unfortunately, however, that human resources available for these particular diseases are very limited. In Indonesia, training programs on tropical medicine is lacking, and until now no graduate institution focusing on tropical medicine is available. The need for graduate institution in tropical medicine is, therefore, mandatory to meet our national health policies. It is expected in the future that many experts in tropical medicine will be widely available in most government and private universities or institutions to bring their expertise to their own institution. These experts will also be valuable for the Ministry of Health to overcome the tropical health problems in Indonesia.

The Center for Tropical Medicine, Gadjah Mada University has been developed to address the tropical health problems of individuals and population, and the concomitant health care delivery issues through its programmatic approach to graduate education, research and technology that directly support human resources development in Indonesia related to tropical medicine.
